If there is a problem with MammoBase...either a training issue or an issue with the program itself, you want it fixed ASAP, and we want it fixed ASAP.  The best way we have to do that is if we can connect to you via the Internet.

We use a product called GoToMeeting (from www.GoToMeeting.com ) to reach out across the Internet and (with your permission) look inside your computer.   This goes as far as even being able to see you move your mouse across the screen.   If need be, we can even control your PC using our own keyboard and mouse, and solve problems directly.

If we do this, you will have the sometimes-eerie experience of watching us move your mouse, as we talk to you on the phone and explain to you what we are doing.

A picture really is worth a thousand words.  We have found that being able to see what you are describing as you talk to us can often cut a one-hour problem down to a five- or ten-minute problem.

Detour:  Does this mean that Big Brother is always able to watch you?

No.

You must give us permission for to enter your computer.  You must take specific initiative to start GoToMeeting, and specific initiative to set it in a mode where we can connect to you

If you aren't running GoToMeeting, then neither we nor anyone else can use that avenue to reach inside your PC.

Does MammoBase require a dedicated phone line?

No.

We do, of course, need to be able to use voice phone with you at the same time as we connect with your PC.  For many, that is no problem, as they have their Internet access via ISDN or through their LAN.

Others without a permanent connection (and without a regular modem line) may have to unplug their fax machine to plug in their computer.  If you plan to go this route, you will want to have a long-enough cable on hand.  You can get these at Radio Shack.

Do I have to have Internet access to use MammoBase?

No.

But without it, if you have a problem, it may take longer to fix.  Some problems may not be solvable unless we can "touch" your data.

Internet access is a great way to make MammoBase more usable.  In addition to helping us help you with more effective technical support, you will be able to:

bullete-mail us at any time, 24 hours/day, with questions as they occur to you
bulletgain access to MammoNet, our support and service web site for MammoBase
bulletreceive e-mail alerts from us if any issues of concern arise that we need to share with you.

If you lack Internet access of any sort, and even lack a modem to support direct long-distance support, a worst-case-scenario problem might only be solved by you waiting on software updates in the mail, and then installing that software yourself.

We want you to be happy.  We think you will be happiest if you have established a method to get on the Internet from your MammoBase computers.

If I know nothing about modems and the Internet, how do I get started?

Look in the Yellow Pages under "Internet Service Providers."  Their main business is helping people get connected.
